Record Boxing Day sales as bargain hunters 'blow £3BILLION' (UK)

Boxing Day bargain hunters spent a record £3billion online and in stores across the UK yesterday in the largest sales day for years.

But retailers have predicted that with revellers rested after Christmas, and no sporting matches vying for shoppers' attention, today could have been even busier.

Shoppers queued from 10.30pm on Christmas Day outside some stores to snap-up the best deals, with a record £519,000 spent every minute online.

Despite the spike in sales, High Streets across Britain were quieter than in recent years with more people than ever choosing to do their shopping from home.

A sudden onslaught of bad weather also hindered shoppers' plans, with more travel chaos expected today as snow blankets swathes of the country.

But British retailers described yesterday as a 'pleasantly robust' start to the post-Christmas sales - and shopping centre Bluewater said a strong Boxing Day showing helped it set a new sales record for the year.

We were at the Freehold mall (new jersey) last night and it was packed. You definitely would have thought it was 2 days before Christmas not 2 days after.

We just stopped there to eat - which we almost didn’t do. One place told us the wait was an hour and a half! But we got burgers at Bobby Flay’s burger palace. Quick service delicious burgers so that saved our supper.
