(Vanity) A Rarely Heard Christmas Carol: Where Shepherds Lately Knelt.

A rarely heard Christmas Carol.

1. Where shepherds lately knelt and kept the angel's word,
I come in half belief, a pilgrim strangely stirred,
but there is room and welcome there for me,
but there is room and welcome there for me.

2. In that unlikely place I find him as they said:
sweet newborn babe, how frail! and in a manger bed,
a still, small voice to cry one day for me,
a still, small voice to cry one day for me.

3. How should I not have known Isaiah would be there,
his prophecies fulfilled? With pounding heart I stare:
a child, a son, the Prince of Peace for me,
a child, a son, the Prince of Peace for me.

4. Can I, will I forget how love was born, and burned
its way into my heart unasked, unforced, unearned,
to die, to live, and not alone for me,
to die, to live, and not alone for me?

My 92 year old mother came to live with my wife and I this past year. She is still very alert and bright but physically not able to do what most can.

I have made a compilation of Christmas Music which we play on our iTunes via appleTV. She had a favorite song that her father played every Christmas when she was young, "The Jolly Coppersmith".

Found it on iTunes, downloaded it and included it in the compilation and played it during our Christmas eve dinner. She had tears in her eyes and could not say anything.

Damn but I love technology!

not spamming for apple trust me . . . I'm about as technical as a ball peen hammer . . .

This is a rather modern carol, written by Jaroslav Vajda, a Chicago-area Lutheran pastor who began writing hymns and gospel songs in the 1960’s.

One of my favorites:

Cradle Song of the Virgin--Dick Haymes & the Song Spinners (1944)

After listening to this, I remembered that I was recently trying to explain to my husband what descant singing is, and had meant to find an example.

Tonight I found this:

The young man is grown up now; and appears to be on the Board of Directors of the Chorus.

Yes, Pastor Vajda passed away in 2008, I believe.

I fear that choral music, especially Christian choral music, will die with my generation. At 53, I am one of the younger ones in this chorus. When Muriel, our choir director retires, I suspect we shan’t have a replacement.

I was caroling on Monday night and some of the younger set ‘sang’ a Christmas ‘rap’. They took the grimace on my face to be a smile of enjoyment!

Sadly, that seems to be the trend. We traditionalists are losing the music war as electric guitars and drums chase organs and choirs out of one church after another.

My choir performed this Sunday as part of our Christmas program. Very simple but lovely. I liked our conductors arrangement better.

When we went out caroling(haven’t since I was 10) we sang the classics. And when I was in church chorus, same thing.

The hymn writer, Jaroslav Vajda, was a fellow pastor in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. He wrote several very good hymns that are in our hymnal, including the one quoted in this thread.
