Under Texas Law, retailers and banks must send the money from expired gift cards to the state. The same is true of gift cards that have an expiration date in the future, but have not been used in three years.
The State Comptroller's Office supplied a list of the top 20 companies that reported forgotten stored gift cards to the state.
The largest chunk of unclaimed gift cards was reported by Men's Wearhouse, with $1.37 million unclaimed. Walmart reported $1.28 million unclaimed, and U.S. Bank, which issues Visa gift cards, reported more than $750,000.
Other reporting funds to the Unclaimed Property include HEB, Land's End, Burlington Coat Factory, Pampered Chef and Tiffany and Company.
If you think they state is holding money from an expired gift card, check first with the store to see if it's still good there.
Otherwise, contact the State Comptroller's Office through www.claimittexas.org.

It all, eventually, belongs to the STATE.
I LOVE gift cards. Why? Because you can buy them at a discount or even get them FREE if you know how to roll them while using coupons. Last week I got about $35 worth of gift cards for FREE! And in the next ten days I hope to get at least $50 more of FREE gift cards. Gonna use them to buy... gifts.
Actually, IIRC, in Texas, the people can reclaim those funds.
In Kalifornia gift cards never expire. I used one that was 5 years old.
Now If I could just figure out what to do with that gift card from Circuit City ;’)
My gift of choice since I never know what to get anyone anyway.
What do you mean, eventually?
The Democrat Party believe it always belongs to the STATE. They are just good enough to let you use it for a bit.
In Canada, they are not allowed to expire.
Seriously, Texas?
You can also do the same routine with discounted VISA or MasterCard gift cards. You just keep rolling them. On one weekend I earned several hundred bucks in VISA gift cards. I even used them to pay some of my online bills even though you're officially not supposed to.
p.s. I even rolled coupon overage into gift cards to “buy” this very computer I am now typing this message with. I put “buy” into quotes because I got the electronics gift cards FREE and used them to buy this Compaq Presario laptop. It even covered the sales tax so if was free FREE!
in California, gift cards have no expiration date... i used two very old “gift certificates” a good five years after i received them... i received them back in the days before they came out with gift cards... i even took a print out of the law or ordinance that says they do not expire, but i did not need to use it... the gal accepted my gift certificates without question :)
I innocently walk in there with a $50 gift card and walk out of there having spent over $2,000.
I'm trying on a pair of trousers and come out of there to a very attractive woman who has laid out a huge assortment of shirts, ties and navy blazers to go with the pants. Suddenly wingtips are introduced with cuff links, socks and belts tossed into the mix.
They know how to upsell at the Men's Wearhouse.
You are a genius at finding bargains! :)
