Today I Stopped Caring
NYC Fire Wire ^ | 12/7/2014 | Lt. Daniel Furseth

Posted on 12/09/2014 5:51:29 AM PST by Fester Chugabrew

Today, I stopped caring about my fellow man. I stopped caring about my community, my neighbors, and those I serve. I stopped caring today because a once noble profession has become despised, hated, distrusted, and mostly unwanted.

I stopped caring today because parents refuse to teach their kids right from wrong and blame us when they are caught breaking the law. I stopped caring today because parents tell their little kids to be good or “the police will take you away” embedding a fear from year one. Moms hate us in their schools because we frighten them and remind them of the evil that lurks in the world.

They would rather we stay unseen, but close by if needed, but readily available to “fix their kid.” I stopped caring today because we work to keep our streets safe from mayhem in the form of reckless, drunk, high, or speeding drivers, only to be hated for it, yet hated even more because we didn’t catch the drunk before he killed someone they may know.

Nevertheless, we are just another tool used by government to generate “revenue.” I stopped caring today because Liberals hate the police as we carry guns, scare kids, and take away their drugs. We always kill innocent people with unjust violence. We are called bullies for using a Taser during a fight, but are condemned further for not first tasing the guy who pulls a gun on us.

And if we do have to shoot, we are asked “why didn’t you just shoot the gun out of their hand?” And when one of us is killed by the countless attacks that do happen (but are rarely reported in the mainstream media) the haters say, “Its just part of the job.” I stopped caring today because Conservatives hate us as we are “the Government.” We try to take away their guns, freedoms, and liberty at every turn.

We represent a “Police State” where “jackbooted badge-wearing thugs” randomly attack innocent people without cause or concern for constitutional rights. We are Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Rodney King all rolled into one lone police officer stopping to help change an old lady’s tire. I stopped caring today as no one wants us around, but instantly demands answers, results, arrests, when a crime takes place.

If a crime isn’t solved within the allocated 60 minutes it takes CSI on television, we are inept, incompetent, or covering something up. If we do get “lucky” it was just that and everyone with a Facebook account can post wonderful comments of how “they” would solve the case and how “we” are not nearly as clever.

I stopped caring today because a video of a cop six states away, from a department that you never heard of, screws up and forgets his oath of honor, thus firing up an internet lynch-mob of cop haters even though 99% of us work twice as hard not to end up in the news and to still be “the good guys.” We are “militarized” because we wear body armor and kevlar helmets when shots are fired or rocks thrown at us and carry scary looking rifles even though everyone knows that they are easier to shoot and are more accurate than a handgun or a shotgun.

I stopped caring today because the culture of today’s instantly connected youth is only there to take and never give back. To never accept responsibility for ones actions, but to blame everyone else instead of themselves. To ask “what is in it for me?” versus “what can I do for you?”

To idolize gangsters, thugs, sexually promiscuous behavior, and criminals over hard work, dedication, and achievement. To argue that getting stoned should be a right, yet getting a job or an education is a hassle. To steal versus earn. To hate versus help. Yes, I stopped caring today. But tomorrow, I will put my uniform back on and I will care again.

The deal with the police is that they stopped acting like “friends” of the community a long time ago.

Individual police officers are fine. You get more than two of them together, and they start acting like you are a “civilian” and could not possibly understand any situation they are dealing with.

The police stop people for no apparent reason. They stand by the window of your car with their hands on their weapons long after than threat has been dismissed.

They ask you where you are going and what you are doing without any probable cause. They make veiled threats to people without any probably cause.

I have seen these things happen. I have had them happen to me repeatedly. The primary reason they happen is that as a person who works late nights in “bad areas” causes me to be driving at 2-3 AM.

If the police want to know why a lot of people do not trust them, its because they have separated themselves from the people they are supposed to be serving.

I have a future son in law who is applying for a State Police Trooper position because he is looking for the same “brotherhood” that he had in the Army. When the local police become militarized in mindset and equipment, we are in trouble.

After Obama gets done with his remaking of police forces with new guidelines and oversight to make sure that they are ineffective, a lot more police are going to stop caring and stop responding to incidents and calls in major parts of towns. Areas will become no go zones and any order will be meted out by the residents themselves or the gangs.

Yes, he does. While I was on active duty I stopped caring many times. I thought about getting out when Clinton was screwing things up but figured I could somehow fight it from within. I finally did retire last year. I was pulled aside more than once for stating my opinions about numerous things that Barry Soetoro has done. Of course that didn’t stop me from talking. There are other ways to voice an opinion such as bumper stickers, t-shirts etc. My wife was always afraid of someone being offended by it all but I told her they don’t have the right to not be offended.

Very well said!

The police here where I live(a virtually crime free small town) patrol the streets as if they’re some sort of occupying army or something. Most of them treat anyone that isn’t them with contempt and suspicion. If I saw one in need of help, I’d just pretend that I didn’t see anything.

IMHO, Obama started all of this disdain for cops when he spouted his ignorant drivel in the Gates-Cambridge police case and proclaimed, "The police acted stupidly" before he knew what the facts were. It telegraphed for us where his minds set was about law enforcement. That he had a preconceived notion that it was the police that are wrong for just doing their jobs.

Words matter, especially every word and syllable coming from you, Mr. President. Now, six years later, everything that happens to blacks, is somehow the cops fault.

Mr. President, you may think the American people are stupid too but it appears the stupid one is the one calling us and the police names.

Maybe you should boot the bad apples off the force, instead of looking the other way, covering for them with phony “internal investigations” or transferring them to a different agency or city.

I used to be a big supporter, now I tend to assume the worst until proven otherwise.

“”Despised, hated, distrusted”

Reading the first paragraph made think he was a reporter.

Maybe it is crime free because of them?

I don’t blame this fellow at all. Our entire culture has become so anti-authority (yet so entitled to perfect safety and comfort) that we must seem too repulsive to bother protecting.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Yes I do hate having police in the government schools. They are not in my child’s private school. And if the police did a better job stopping crime and fostering an organized environment instead of shooting dogs and acting like bullies with a badge, maybe, LT, things wouldn’t be where they are.

But the cops take no responsibility for this issue whatsoever. So LT, you’d best resign, because if you don’t care, you’re toast.

This guy is way behind the curve. Cops around here haven’t given a damn in years. Maybe they just sense the feeling is mutual.

My town is the smallest little white bread community in Massachusetts.

I have a chief of police who will only issue restricted LTCs. He will make you drop a couple hundred dollars on an ADDITIONAL class beyond the one required by the state to get a CC permit.

And the requirements are not posted anywhere. And when you ask, you are treated like a gun nut. And if you are request the requirements in writing, you will never get the license.

AND, if you carry openly (which is allowed in MA) you will be stopped the second you step out in public.

I think you make a good point. Some of the very characteristics that police departments look for in recruits are the very characteristics that should be disqualifying.

If I lived in an area like that, I would welcome it. If police cannot handle it then it is up to We The People to put the rabid dogs down.

That said, I live in a quasi-rural town where the police are professional, responsive and respectful. I'm friends with a few of them and have had many interactions with a lot of the guys on the force and my local PD is always a welcome sight. We're some of the lucky ones.
