The EU's top human rights court on Thursday ordered France to pay thousands of euros to Somali pirates who attacked French ships for "violating their rights" by holding them an additional 48 hours before taking them before a judge.

The Somali pirates were apprehended on the high seas by the French army on two separate occasions in 2008 and taken back to France for trial.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) said that French authorities should have brought the pirates before a judge "without delay" when they arrived on French territory after being held at sea. The EU’s top human rights court said French authorities were wrong to keep the pirates in custody for an additional 48 hours before bringing them before a judge.

It would have been better if the pirates were caught by the Russians or Chinese.

I am sorry, but this is so far beyond the pale that the judges are the ones who need to have their alleged human rights violated; keelhauling would be a good start.

Or it could simply be abolished.

I believe the deadline to charge is 48 hours in the U.S., at least in the federal system. Can’t fathom how that could possibly be a human rights violation. You have to give the prosecutors some time to prepare.

This came to mind. -Tom

from answerbag;
The phrase "The law is an ass" originates in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, when the character Mr. Bumble is informed that "the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction". Mr. Bumble replies "If the law supposes that, the law is a ass — a idiot".

Insanity. In future cases of piracy on the high seas, I would suggest the French exercise the modern equivalent of Rule Three-oh-Three (.303).

“A pirate, an outlaw, or a common enemy to all mankind, may be put to death at any time. It is justified by the laws of nature and nations. “

In the US the navy would’ve been granted a “good faith” exception as long as they could show they did everything they could to get somebody an initial appearance but something out of their control prevented them.

Will the EU likewise punish Putin for blowing the bastards out of the water? I gave Vlad a two thumbs up for that one! Nothing like 200 rounds from a 12.7 to convince a pirate to change his ways, or learn how to swim....

France, Next time just blow the pirate ship out of the water. Problem solved and the sharks get feed. but please make sure the shells have been soaked in pig fat. This way the muzzies do not get the 72 virgins as they violated muzzie purification rites.

When Somali pirates get intercepted by a naval vessel, they must break out in a sh*t-eating grin when they notice it's flying a European flag.

It would have been better if the pirates were caught by the Russians or Chinese.

In the 1800s the British captured and tried many Chinese pirates around Hong Kong area. However, with the British legal system many pirates were set free. One British governor found a solution to this problem. He just turned over those pirates to the Chinese authorities and they had nearly a 100% conviction rate.
