TUSCALOOSA, Ala. If you could tap into Nick Sabans fondest football dreams, youd probably find the Alabama football coach fantasizing about shutouts and cartilage-rattling tackles and a relentless pass rush.
Touchdowns would be down the wish list.
But on a surreal November night when the Iron Bowl scoreboard read 55-44 an abomination to the Pat Dye generation Saban could deal with it.
Because his team had the 55, and Auburn had the 44. His team has the Southeastern Conference Western Division title, and the Tigers dont. His 11-1 team should still be No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings this week, and 7-4 Auburn will be well down the list.
Those are the overarching truths that make the discomfort of winning this way tolerable.
The Crimson Tide gave up more yards than it ever has before (630) on more plays than it ever has endured before (90). The Tide withstood a barrage by Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall, who set school records for total offense (505 yards) and passing yards (465). When a reporter tried to tap dance around those facts when asking Saban about a defense that seemed to struggle, the coach called him on it.
There wasnt any seemed like it, Saban said, poking at the stat sheet before him. Youre not going to hurt my feelings. They passed for 465 yards. Ive got it right here on paper.

Auburn couldn’t get from Red Zone to End Zone
Roll Tide!
ROLL TIDE!! What a fabulous game.
If my Buckeyes don’t make it to the playoffs, I will at least enjoy seeing Bama anihilate the Seminoles!
When Nick Saban was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, he smacked the local media around...they hate him.
For that reason alone, I enjoy seeing Nick Saban succeed.
By getting the Auburn receiver to drop 2 touchdown passes?
Auburn did a good job of defeating themselves this season. Last night walking away with only 3 points multiple times. Other losses giving up 14 points in the first five minutes of the game. And penalties. What was with 3 of them last night, almost in a row, with 5 in the backfield formation? And a couple of big 10 & 15 yard penalties.
I do have a GREAT picture this a.m. on my daughters facebook of her in her AUMB uniform and her boyfriend in his Million Dollar Band uniform.
Other than that . . . sad end to the season.
War Eagle!
That is cool about your AUMB daughter dating and Alabama Band student. Growing up in Alabama I had many friends and family that that dated or married into conflicted loyalties between AU and UA. My father even attended both Universities. It is one of the greatest rivalries and best games of the year.
Yep, I agree after the MS State game. One of their friends from high school band is in the Famous Maroon Band . . . all the kids have had a great year.
And then when they let Texas A & M beat them.
And today my husband and son aren’t having much better luck with their TN Titans.
That is neat your Dad attended both. I just love the little town of Auburn! We’re up north in Rocket City USA, aka Huntsville. :)
Auburn did a great job but made key errors.
Saban though is the best coach of this, or possibly any, college football era. Great recruiting and his players stay around, develop well, and move on to pro careers. He’s got the factory going - sad to say.
Was hoping to see two SEC west schools in the playoffs. No luck though as State laid an egg...
War Eagle ! See ya next year...
Alabama, Auburn, FSU, all outstanding football teams. But sorry to break it to y’all...
This is the year of the DUCK!!
Mariota is for real and the best player in all FBS. I can’t wait for the rest of the country to finally get to watch him.
I watched him last night, and he was impressive!
Charles Nelson is becoming one of the most prolific players in the country. I can’t wait until he gets the ball more.
Doubtful is was even Saban's idea. Most likely Kiffin's.
Sorry, “Sims”.
