Foxcatcher, 1 vanity opinion (may contain spoilers)
Personal opinion | 11/22/2014 | Self

Just got back from Foxcatcher and yes I'm a moviholic.

Big build up for the three lead actors (Carrell, Tatum, and Ruffalo). If your comment is Who dat? You probably clicked onto the wrong thread. Save us all some time.

Possible support nomination for Ruffalo and Tatum as the Schultz brothers, probably the two best known and influential collegiate and US Olympic wrestlers.

Carrell plays John E. du Pont in a tour de force. Possiblly best actor nom. If you're used to the comic actor, the Office, 40 year old virgin etc., you may be very surprised at how well he does in this turn in a serious drama.

Vanessa Redgrave (I know, save your time) plays John du Pont's mother. She's only on camera about 4 times and has few lines, so that's a break for some of you; but you can feel her presence throughout the movie as it informs (gratitutious liberal artsy word) Carrell's behavior throughout the movie.

The movie takes place on an estate used as the film setting. I have been to the original du Pont estate outside Wilmington, Delaware. This one is in Penn near Valley Forge. Couple of good shots of VF if you haven't been there. Worth a trip if you're near the place, VF and Delaware. The estate is like a character in the film and it illustrates the lonely life of this very wealthy guy who became obsessed with Olympic wrestling and the Schultz brothers.

It's a slow moving movie with no car chases and not much suspense since the end is already known to most or if you want just look up the story on the net. The acting is first rate and I was surprised at how well Ruffalo and Tatum pulled off the wresting scenes. It's a big change for Tatum, but Ruffalo has been around the block and is know for his acting chops.

If you want an adult drama based upon a true story, with first rate acting, this may be for you.

I don't recall the rating, but I would guess PG-13. Teens could see it, but they would most likely be bored stiff. Couple of cocaine sniffing scenes. A couple of scenes with Carrell and Tatum wrestling, cutting hair, but nothing more explicit. If they were gay, it's very understated and not directly played out.

N-Joy!

Looks like R-rated. Don’t agree, but I defer and those of you who care, suit your own sensibilities.

Just saw Mockingjay. Good, but as a half of a real story, hard to say how good it is til you see part 2. Still, no way anyone can say this is anything BUT an anti-government, anti-DC movie.

Haven’t seen any of them, but I know they’re blockbusters.

Likes me some Jennifer Lawrence since Silver Linings Playbook. Liked what she did with the character there. Not so much American Hustle.

BTW, this looks like a movie I’d want to see, but will likely wait for DirectTV. For some reason, about the only thing I can stand in a theater is an action movie . . . unless it’s my own (www.rockinthewallstudios.com).

Went to the AMC in La Jolla.

They had new seats, recliners and you picked your seat when you bought your ticket. I rarely pick my seat in public.

They had an usher in the hall way and would only let adults down that hallway. Maybe kids with parents, don’t know. About 6 movies that way including Fox and Hunger. First time I’ve seen a theatre pay that much attention. If I dropped my kids off I would appreciated the attention to the control.

Don’t see any reason why you need a big screen. Quiet drama. Few scenes of horse ranch, Valley Forge, and estate grounds, but nothing you can’t see at home.

>>Based on true story, so many of know the ending.<<

Classic ending spoilers:
* It sinks (OK, not a spoiler...)
* She’s a man
* He is already dead
* He killed his mom and it was him the whole time
* Mankind destroyed the world
* They were ALL dead the whole time
* It was the name of his sled
* It is made of people!

While the Schultz brothers were most likely the greatest siblings in collegiate and college wrestling I think one would have to consider Dan Gable as the greatest. He is essentially the wrestling equivalent of John Wooden.
