Does Google Search Censor Information They Get?

Posted on 11/19/2014 12:45:33 PM PST by Vinylly

I tried to do a Google Search on 'The Criminal Record of Michael Brown'. I couldn't get any information but just a lot of pictures of him. I have a feeling they are trying to make Brown out as some kind of National Hero. Is there any place that is unbiased about Browns records? I would like to know for another talk site.

True. All the images that come up are very sympathetic photos of him wearing a graduation gown. Only a few of the famous thug robbery appear at the bottom of the page.

I’m not positive, but I believe Brown’s juvie criminal records have been sealed. I recall a media organization suing for their release, but feel quite confident that they may never see the light of day.

AFAIK, most Google search results are purely the consequence of algorithms processing a whole lot more information than we realize. WE, as the conservative/right, may perceive certain views of the otherwise random search string “Michael Brown”, but there’s a whole lot more information flowing out there regarding the subject all of which adds up to warm fuzzy results when you do the search.

I doubt the search is scrubbed. You’re just getting the result of far more discussion regarding him as a fallen cherub, than as a thug with a record.

No.
Unless they have somehow become an arm of the government, they cannot censor. They can edit. They can delete. Since it is their privately owned site, they can determine what they will release to you. But they do not censor because they cannot censor.

Your response fills the probability bill - he may have been being looked at for something since he stopped being a minor, but I’d hazard all his convictions (and other charges) were while he was a juvie.

Google only wants you to know, what it wants you to know

They can delete.

"my mail was being censored"
synonyms: cut, delete parts of, make cuts in,

But they do not censor because they cannot censor.

Censorship is the suppression of speech.

Sounds a whole lot like delete and censor have similar meanings.

I think many of the search engines do. I tried *searching* Lindsay Graham in a tutu and only came up with his official portrait images....of he AND Juan. Hmmm.

Censor: a person who supervises conduct and morals: as

a : an official who examines materials (as publications or films) for objectionable matter

b : an official (as in time of war) who reads communications (as letters) and deletes material considered sensitive or harmful

2 : one of two magistrates of early Rome acting as census takers, assessors, and inspectors of morals and conduct

3 : a hypothetical psychic agency that represses unacceptable notions before they reach consciousness

I think the major point behind the concept of censorship is that it is backed up by force. It's not voluntary.

Here’s a nice compilation by Snopes.

I know it’s fairly liberal site, but that doesn’t mean the info they publish is all inaccurate.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/crime/brown.asp

They quote the official that there were no major felony charges against him or criminal complaints of any type when he died.

According to NBC snooze Saint Charging Bull was never CONVICTED of a juvenile crime.

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/michael-brown-shooting/no-top-felony-convictions-michael-browns-juvenile-record-court-n194701

Which begs the question was he ever arrested in connection with a felony crime.

Sorry, but this is a pet peeve. I grow very weary of people saying a private party or entity is “censoring” them.
Only governments can censor. Private parties or companies cannot do anything to deny you free speech. Only Governments can, Private businesses can and do make decisions as to you can practice you free speech on their property or in the case of Google, on their site. Unfair? Maybe. Probably but that is their decision to make.
Think of it this way, would you allow Al Sharpton to make speeches from your front porch? My guess is no. By your interpretation, you should be required to.

Or, more accurately, they “filter” the information they provide to you.
