The mother of a 10-year-old Rio Rancho girl who disappeared for three days last week says her daughter spent that time hiding in the neighborhood and in desert open space a mile from their home.
Alexandra Greenwalls disappearance prompted a search by multiple law enforcement agencies that combed the neighborhood and nearby open space areas on foot, in off-road vehicles, in a helicopter and with bloodhounds.
She returned home unscathed about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Catherine Greenwall Allen said Wednesday that her daughter told her she hid in thick bushes in their central Rio Rancho neighborhood and moved to the open space, able to keep out of sight of the search parties looking for her.
Wednesday, Rio Rancho police said they had closed their investigation; they found that the family and girls stories were consistent and there was no evidence of wrongdoing.
The girl left the home prepared, with a backpack full of clothing and another with a sheepskin rug and a blanket to lie on, Allen said.
While searchers scoured the streets around their Idaho Creek Road home, Alexandra was hiding in the desert, Allen said. When the search moved into open spaces, the girl returned to the neighborhood.
Allen said the girl left home early last Thursday, angry because her mother and stepfather had come down hard on her over her grades. Allen said the girl also was upset because she wasnt getting to see her other dad, another stepfather who lives in Madrid, enough.
Her message to parents: Talk to your children about running away. Use this story as an opportunity to talk to your children, because we were all scared half to death.

Now that shes home, Alexandra, her younger brother, mother and current stepfather are all receiving counseling. (She's in a broken home with at least two stepfathers).
Thank goodness she’s all right.
Sorry for the pun.
Betcha she was really hiding out in Walter White’s RV.
The current stepfather/former stepfather thing suggested a rather chaotic environment from which a child might reasonably wish to escape. Good job on her survival skills!
Maybe she knew some tricks, like spraying pepper spray on her shoes, or crossing a creek :)
Yeah, I picked up on that too.
How many “daddies” does this poor kid have?
Yet another reason why disfunctional familes are - well - disfunctional.
Just think the temperature at night has fallen to around 30 - 35 degrees here. I agree, something is missing in this story. A 10 year old out all night without heavy clothing and no sleeping bags????? for several nights?????
SOMEone is lying.
Maybe everybody is lying.
The parents are lying about just how big a reason the kid has to prefer to be elsewhere.
The girl is lying about where she goes for refuge.
Lol.
I was out walking where there are a TON of doggies.
In my pocket of my sleeveless parka I had a small Baggie-size bag of FREEZE-DRIED liver bits. They were in a zip lock bag, zipped, and ANOTHER zip lock bag, also zipped.
NONE of the doggies I passed gave me a second look.
THEN, all of a sudden, out of the blue, this BLOODHOUND comes flyin' down the hill, HOWLING away, from about a half a mile away, HOWLING all the way.
She FLIES up to me, looks at my pocket (where the liver bits are), looks up at me, sits down and waits, all the while looking at me and my pocket.
Her owner came RUNNING down the hill yelling: WHAT on EARTH do you have in your pocket?!?!?!
"Judy" the Bloodhound, had caught the scent of my freeze-dried liver bits WAY up the hill and took off towards it (me) as soon as she sniffed it.
WHAT a nose!
NO WAY this girl could have eluded a bloodhound with her scent in their nostrils. Their floppy ears, I was told, HOLD IN the scent they are searching for.
YEP.
SOMEone is lying.
It wasn't that cold for her two nights: Thursday 10/30 72-46, Friday 10/31 70-52. Saturday 11/1 69-57.
If she wasn't lying, the temperatures weren't that harsh - warm clothes, blanket and rug could have kept her warm. The police searched all her friends homes, though some may have given her shelter or lied about her presence. Just saying the cold wasn't low enough to discount her story if she was prepared.
“Allen said the girl left home early last Thursday, angry because her mother and stepfather had come down hard on her over her grades. Allen said the girl also was upset because she wasnt getting to see her other dad, another stepfather who lives in Madrid, enough. “
Allen said, Allen said. What did the daughter say was the reason ?
Maybe the daughter needs to get a glowing neon sign to wear around her neck that says “there’s a reason I don’t want to sleep in that house” .

Rio Rancho? I’d want to run away too! lol
Allen said the girl also was upset because she wasnt getting to see her other dad, another stepfather....

Good heavens! Poor child.
I wonder why the bloodhounds didn't find her. Darned odd, the entire tale.
Did you share any of the treats with Judy, just to reinforce her bad behavior ?
