IMHO, most current country music has gone down the path of pop, sort of the way punk rock did in the 1990s. It has its place, I suppose. But for me, it’s not really country music in the classic sense.

And no, I’ve never heard of this woman. The last up and coming country star I paid attention to was Gretchen Wilson, and that was a decade ago.

When I was a kid growing up in the 60's my mom was a big Country-Western fan. We had a record called "Countrypolitan Hits". So even back then Country music was trying to go pop, e.g. Patsy Cline.

I remember the 70's when pop music fell in love with novelty songs ... followed soon by Country ("I don't like spiders and snakes", "Oh yes they call him the streak", etc.) Later some Country musicians even tried to do a little rap.

For a long time Country music has been pop music with southern accents.

Some of the best Country music today is from post-punk bands that play something like country-folk with edgier guitars.

Regardless of how its labeled there are just two kinds of music: the kind that sounds good and the kind that sucks.
