why? the only downside is the tiles desktop. everything else about it is an improvement over 7.

The robust features internally that the power user is aware of are never understood by the casual consumer.
MS made the assumption that Tiles worked tablet controls better and many users had no use for touch screen laptops. The GUI they were conditioned to use was not the boot up they were presented with — boom, sales failure.
