deadline Hollywood ^

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel has finally found its Doctor Strange. I’m hearing Benedict Cumberbatch is the studio’s choice for the superhero pic, and negotiations are about to begin. The news comes after talks with Joaquin Phoenix around the time of Comic-Con went south, and Marvel went back to the drawing board. With names like Jared Leto and Tom Hardy also in the mix, this is obviously a coveted role. I expect this deal to make.

Just what we need more strange men. Don’t we have more than enough X-men. The coded gay coming out scene in X-men was enough to make me almost vomit.

I’m not sure if he’s the right actor. The comic has shown him to be an arrogant SOB, along the lines of Tony Stark.

I think they’re working on another series of Sherlock now. Coming out early next year. Last 3 or 4 episodes.

The guy is in demand. And so is Watson.

Anybody else sick and tired of superheroes, or am I hopelessly uncool? The last superhero movie I saw had Christopher Reeve in it....

I’m just old enough to remember the tv movie/series pilot from the late 1970s with Peter Hooten.

Not great, but back then you kinda took what you could get for your live action comic book fix. Not as good as The Incredible Hulk series with Bill Bixby, but decidedly better than the Spiderman tv series with Nicholas Hammond. Nothing against Hammond, that show was just uber-lame. Spiderman getting beaten up by bikers? C’mon, now...

I'm with you! No more comic book movies, how about some adult fare for a change.

Nope, you’re not alone. Oh, I still could sit back and watch the old “Captain Marvel” serial with Tom Tyler any day of the week, and similarly sit back and get a huge kick out of reading an old Curt Swan or Wayne Boring era “Superman” story.

But the modern aspects of the superhero genre are things I find rather offputting... the heavy ‘angst’ of the characters, the overblown and operatic set-pieces, and the hyperkinetic special-effects that make everything seem like a cartoonish video-game. Makes for a hellish movie-going experience in my book.

Bad news for both of you. Marvel owned the day and announced nine more movies today.

Comics are just another medium for story-telling, much like television or books.

If you want some adult fare, there’s probably a comic (or a hundred) for you somewhere.

Not really bad news. It doesn’t affect me one way or another. I just think it’s another stupid phenomenon that appeals to an increasingly entertainment-addicted culture.

I didn’t mean porn. I meant real adult movies, like North by Northwest, Gone with the Wind, etc.

I think they start filming in January 2015. It will then run in the UK, and then in the US, which will be in a couple of years by that time.

he already is Dr. Strange with his doughy face squinting tiny eyes.

He needs a GOOD blepharoplasty job just like Renee Zellwegger!

More DC universe and less Marvel for me. Though 1 marvel character I would like to see the Silver Surfer team up with Miguel Alcubierre to work out the whole space warp thing while surfing in an Alcubierre bubble.

Nuff said.
