MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- While expressing his love for his home state of Alabama, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook criticized the state for being slow to grant equality to minorities and the poor.
Having grown up in a loving family in Robertsdale, he said he doesn't understand why so many in Alabama and the rest of the nation are slow to grant equal rights to everyone, including the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender community.
"As a state, we took too long to steps toward equality," he said. "We were too slow on equality for African-Americans. We were too slow on interracial marriage, and we are still too slow for the equality for the LGBT community."
Cook, a graduate of Auburn University, spoke on behalf of the Class of 2014 inductees into the Alabama Academy of Honor at the State Capitol Monday morning, focusing his remarks on the state of Alabama 50 years after the signing of the Civil Rights Act.
The battle for civil rights and the work of Martin Luther King Jr. impacted him growing up in Alabama, Cook said, and it helped make him into what he is today.
"All of us share the responsibility of making us equal," he said, adding that we must all work together.
In the state of Alabama, a person can still be fired based on their sexual orientation, Cook remarked.
Additionally, Cook said there is still a lack of equal access to education in the state.
A product of Alabama public schools, Cook said he received a great education that allowed him to dream big, and that combining big dreams with hard work anything is possible.

I hereby pledge to never buy another Apple whatever....nothing they will get nothing from me!!! Ever again!
I have been posting for years that Apples target sales demographic is the urban hipster types/hipster wannabees/ young skulls full of mush and the gays
“Equal Rights?” I am getting so tired of this, they have equal rights, they can work, consume, live and die just like they rest of us. They have a great freedom of speech than we do and marriage is not a right.
Tim Cook is just another oxygen thief.
Swordmaker will be here any minute to try to explain this one away.
Gotta get my tank of popcorn out. This ought to be good.
Dear Mr. Cook,
I am not equal to perverts, and perverts are not equal to me.
Got it?
Good.
Can’t buy Apple.. this is just another episode of them pushing the sodomite agenda.
Can’t buy Android. They’re trying to one-up Apple, to the point where their Sunday commercials now show homo faux-marriage proposals.
Are there any family-friendly electronics companies left?
Interesting point.
Why is Limbaugh such an Apple fanboy?
Hard to imagine he needs the money....
Maybe Alabama should respond by asking why aren’t Apple products produced in Alabama instead of in China since Apple wants Alabama’s citizens to buy Apple products.
Typical liberals: Always giving something to someone else while taking from another group.
Yep, that just about covers it all. Well put.
We ARE all equal in the eyes of God as we are all His beloved children. THAT is where it's important.
Exactly. They are more equal than you.
just what does he mean when he calls for “equal rights?”
I understand equal opportunity, but equal rights???
Exactly. One is worse than the next. I have chosen the Apple platform for 2 reasons. It just works together better and I am increasingly uncomfortable with Google having massive access to every call, text and movement. I like separating as much as possible. Apple seems to be pushing back on the government tracking with their new phone, which appeals to me.
There really isn’t a viable alternative to the big providers.
Equal access to education??? He needs to spend some time in the minority ruled high schools near his home town. He might want to take some body guards or other personal protection. And then he should sit through classes every day for a month. Or maybe he could install some surveillance equipment in some classrooms without the students knowledge. Then he can come up with a new solution.
I know a whole bunch of homosexual Alabamians. They seem to do very well professionally. They are lawyers, teachers, professors, musicians, computer programmers. They survived growing up in Alabama and went through college and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees. None of them came out of the closet until they graduated from college. Go figure.
Mr. Cook obviously didn’t absorb Alabama values despite being raised here. But then, we are just backwards redneck hicks here.
I don’t think I have ever seen anyone so determined to help fund a liberal company. He has a completely insane fixation on that company.
Looking forward to maybe sending my kids to college in Alabama. Should be a refreshing change from California.
It’s one thing to like a company’s products.
It’s a whole other level of crazy to literally work as a volunteer PR agent and attack dog for them on a political website, while never participating in any other discussions on any other topic. It’s not like they even know you exist other than as a person whose payment cleared when you bought their gadget.
Seriously, when was the last time you bought Apple anything (other than pie)? I don't think they just lost your business...
...and the horse he rode in on.
They have equal rights, but thats not what they really desire.
They really want forced acceptance of their deviant lifestyle. They won’t accept anything less.
