The two Fortune 500 companies I’ve worked for in the last five years went way overboard. A woman at one facility I worked at had an unexpected period and spilled a few drops of blood on the floor. They treated it like a five alarm emergency, with yellow and black tape, orange cones and personal protection equipment. They moped it up and put it in a container that has to be accounted for and it takes thousands of dollars to dispose of. If she’d have called me I’d have wiped it up with a paper towel and not said a word. The response was so overboard and she was so embarrassed she quit and took another job. The same thing happened when a water pressure surge caused a few drops of rusty water to leak form the fire nozzles. The company responded the same way…to rusty water. Crazy.

FWIW that water can be pretty severely contaminated with bacteria. It sits in those pipes for years.

To be fair, however, the bacteria aren't likely to be of a pathogenic variety, the environment in a pipe being pretty different from that in you.
