Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) said it would split into two listed companies, separating its computer and printer businesses from its faster-growing corporate hardware and services operations, and eliminate another 5,000 jobs as part of its turnaround plan.
HP said its shareholders would own a stake in both businesses through a tax-free transaction next year, the details of which still needed to be worked out.
Each business contributes about half of HP's revenue and profit.
Shares of the 75-year-old company, which has struggled to adapt to the new era of mobile and online computing, were up 4 percent at $36.60 in early trading on Monday.
A spinoff of the PC business was last proposed in 2011 by then-Chief Executive Officer Leo Apotheker as the company struggled in the highly competitive PC market. HP later ditched the plan -- and Apotheker, replacing him with current CEO Meg Whitman.
"Make no mistake, one HP was the right thing to do to begin the turnaround of this company," Whitman said on a conference call. "But now ... this is definitely the right tactic."

The Printer and Ink business saved Hewlett-Packard while I was there during very hard times. It is very profitable and I’m sorry to see it put away.
HP is still a player in the corporate enterprise. The ProLiant series of servers is a rock solid computing platform and continues to grow and innovate. To be fair, their PC and printer lines have been lagging in the last 5 years if not longer.
My last multifunction printer from then was a PhotoSmart inkjet printer that stopped working after about 8 months. Meanwhile, their old workhorse inkjets like my 720C still cranks out flawless document printouts like it’s brand new.
Shame on them for making substandard crap and upselling ink.
,,,,,,,, and the unemployment will drop to 4.8% I’ll bet . Cutting down the workforce makes it much easier to subtract only those currently being laid off from the current workforce makes it soooooo easy to reduce the rate ,,,, just forget those 90+ millions still out of jobs . Maybe illegal democrats can fill those jobs under the table while living on welfare and food stamps . God I love America Today ( sarc).
My Last Ever HP printer experienced the same thing. No more HP for me. Ever.
I'm ex-aerospace so I remember the dominance of HP in the test equipment sector. A great company then. Apparently no longer.
I have an HP Deskjet F4235 for my limited printing and copying needs.
The printer cost less than $100 probably 8-10 years ago, the color ink from Sams Club is HP60XL and costs about $40. I buy it on line from vendors on Amazon for about $ 21.
I've tried refills and refurbished ink cartridges both color and black {$8-$20} with mixed results, so for the past few years I've stayed with HP sealed products.
The printer speed is slow, but it is very reliable and the quality is excellent.
For limited home use, I'll stay with this HP product until it dies.
I’m in the same boat with my DeskJet 720C. It no longer works with Windows 8, but I’ve setup CUPS on my Linux server to port print jobs over to it. I’m a very limited printer (<100 prints per year, on average), but when I need to print something, I want it right then not 2 days later.
HP sucks. They killed VMS and OSF/1, the two best operating systems ever. They killed Alpha and Itanium, the two best hardware platforms of their time.
The Elitebook laptop I have from them (that I got through work) is a major piece of crap. Two disk drives so far. I used to work in the disk drive industry and I’ve never heard of the maker of the drives they use.
A pox on their house. I hope they fail.
My 895Cse as well.
Clear B&W suits me just fine.
Tuesday may be better.
HP will split into Hewlett Co. and Packard Co., LOL.

I have used them for many years. The ink does not fade.
