I hear ya, but, no, they cannot take out “allegedly” until it’s been adjudicated. Otherwise the paper can be sued because the person is innocent until proven guilty...

It is especially galling in cases of premeditated murder...

‘Alleged murderer Professor Plumb who was found in the Library with a lead pipe standing over the lifeless body of Col. Mustard was arraigned today...

‘Professor Plumb issued a statement: ‘Of course I killed Mustard! He was lying to Miss Scarlet about me!’

It’s still “allegedly.”
