Elizabeth Stringer Keefe had been trying for 13 years to locate the owner of a tattered wedding photo found among the Ground Zero rubble. Persistence and the power of social media finally paid off on Friday night when Keefe who had been given the photograph by a friend found the owner.
The snapshot belonged to Fred Mahe, a Colorado man who used to live in New York.
It was my small contribution, trying to do something good in conjunction to 9/11, Keefe, a Boston professor, told the Daily News. The purpose for me was to bring some small comfort to someone.
Mahe kept the photo on his desk on the 77th floor of the World Trade Centers south tower. He wasnt in the office at the time of the terror attack. A month after the planes struck the towers, one of Keefes friends found the picture.
The photograph was of a wedding in Aspen, Colo. It had six people in it, including Mahe, the bride and the groom. All of them are alive.
(My friend) gave it to me and asked that I do something meaningful with it, Keefe said.

Years went by and she heard nothing. But ahead of Thursdays 13th anniversary, Keefes mission got a boost. Universal hub, a network of Boston blogs, wrote about her search, drawing more attention than ever.
We saw the worst of humanity on 9/11. But on 9/12 we saw the best of humanity. Elizabeth embodies that.
More than 68,800 people retweeted the photo, including country music star Blake Shelton. A friend of the photographs owner finally spotted the photo online Friday. He recognized Mahes face in the background and forwarded him a link.

Awesome.
That’s a very nice story. I’m glad all pictured are well.
Great story.
Thank you for this. It truly is a story I needed to read today.
Holy moly. Fred Mahe, looking at the camera, is a fraternity brother of mine (Lambda Chi Alpha) from CSU. Small world.
