NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Child Protective Services is investigating the case of an autistic child placed in a closet during school where he scratched and clawed at the wall, according to an attorney representing the child's family.

Kim Gosnell said her son may have had an outburst, but she claims Georgetown Elementary caused her child to harm himself because of how staff members reacted to the situation.

School personnel drafted an individualized education plan with Gosnell to outline how staff should respond when the child is over sensitized, but Gosnell claims the plan did not include placing the boy in a closet.

Perhaps they should try to de-sensitize him by putting on headphones playing loud heavy metal and project rapidly changing images on the walls and ceiling.

I think it is terrible how school systems are treating kids these days.
I also wonder how much responsibility still lies with the parents, though. So many kids are having emotional troubles due to their home situation, but the parents want them to be treated as if nothing is wrong.
I knew a kid about 15 years ago that was diagnosed s ADHD simply because he had been taught no self control whatsoever. It was fine for his parents to ignore this seven year old ball of energy, but the school couldn’t. He was disruptive, disrespectful and selfish. The parents demanded that the school “accommodate” his unruly behavior and treat him like everyone else. In other words, their little angel couldn’t be doing anything wrong. It was obviously the school’s fault.
The parents were obviously not communicating with the school on a regular basis.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
