These paper wasps do not attack. Their nest gets to be about 4 inches across. I leave them be. However, if I get stung they may have to go. Until then I just observe them. I also have some sort of two inch bee that bores holes in the under side of my redwood beams.
These are all my "pets" as I cannot have a cat or dog right now.

I don’t bother wasps at all. Yes they can sting but they are harmless. They move out of my way and if need be I throw them outside.

We call those big bees "Carpenter Bees" in Hawaii.
They do bore big holes and should be patched if you have termites in the area.
