My approach to this one is from the point of view of an audiophile.

Few home systems approach live sound (that’s “approach”). No (that’s zero, nada) large auditorium audio system I’ve heard has sounds that I would even class as “not that bad at all.”

I stand to be corrected, of course, but for now I’d avoid any “sampled orchestra” performance just as I’d avoid coming anywhere near to the Obamadork

Along the “audiophile perspective”, I’m a distributor of high-end audio from Europe. At one time I imported a line of amplifiers that included $350k monoblocks from Japan.

Even with those ultra-expensive designs, it still lacked the ultimate reality of the real thing. It did sound quite stunning though designs from my Italian design partner are far more affordable and sound more real than the Japanese products.

Bottom line, it’s gonna be a long, long time before true reality is reproduced in the home.

Without getting into the specifics of where, when, and how, I once recorded a world renowned symphony orchestra on a linear PCM recorder at 96Khz using a pair of hand crafted and matched binaural microphones while sitting in a seat just above the stage. My excuse for this bit of digital piracy was that it was one of my favorite pieces. When heard though a set of high-end headphones, the recording is every bit a brilliant, subtle, detailed, and as deep as what I heard in person. In fact it’s better. Also, no matter how often I listen to it, I hear new things every single time. In this case, the recording was much, much better than the live performance, if only because I could never have gotten so much out of it with just one hearing.
