The actor's son, Michael Attenborough told the BBC that his father died Sunday. He had been in poor health for some time.
Prime Minister David Cameron issued a statement calling Attenborough "one of the greats of cinema."
"His acting in 'Brighton Rock' was brilliant, his directing of 'Gandhi' was stunning," Cameron said.

I remember him from Jurassic park but never knew who he was. His younger brother David is more familiar to me do to his narration of nature films over the years.
Enjoyed him in Jurassic Park and The Great Escape, and as the director of Magic and Shadowlands both with Anthony Hopkins. I think he also had at least an adult child killed in the Christmas tsunami if I’m remembering correctly. I’ll have to look that up. Rest in Peace to him.
I think he and James Garner were the last of the main Great Escape cast members to pass away, both this year.
Unfortunately, David jumped on the AGw bandwagon. Talented men, tho.

Richard Attenborough has spoken movingly of how he can’t bear to celebrate Christmas because of the devastating loss of his daughter and granddaughter in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.
Yes, that’s annoying. We really like his nature documentaries. His snoozy narration is just the thing for tired, overwrought children. “Sit down here and watch ‘Blue Planet’,” and next thing you know, they’re all passed out on the living room floor.
That wouldn’t have worked with me. I always loved the nature shows as a kid.
Great picture. :)
His performance in the movie Sand Pebbles with Steve
McQueen was also quite good.
The Great Escape completed. RIP Sir Richard.
My kids like them too, but David Attenborough’s voice is a sedative. “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” had energetic narration.
That was a baby Grizzly. If that was a full-size Grizzly, that Bear would've torn Stan limb fromlimb.
I most remember him from The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles, and A Matter of Life and Death as an actor. As a director, i think of Young Winston and Gandhi.
Quite a body of work.. For a mortal. :-)
RIP SiR Richard
"Today we're searching for the legendary giant anaconda of the Amazon and..OH look! Jim's got a big one between his legs right now!"
Marlin Perkins was always good for some beer out the nose.
