He is a former (retired) DOD security specialist and rather worldly person. That probably explains his attitude. I know someone with a similar background, and he has told me in the past that U.S. intelligence officials have long considered Israel one of the biggest risks the U.S. faces in terms of espionage, theft of military secrets, etc.
