Hello gardening fans from our little acre in Missouri. Forget all about the "cool" summer. The usual dog days of August have struck! We are having a heat wave.
That means I am carrying buckets of water to plants. Groan! Well I have an additional 3 lbs of tomatoes red ripe and lucious looking - almost all Roma, so spaghetti sauce will be made this weekend.
I have harvested some lovely red sweet bell and pimento peppers. We have loads of green bells. Stir fry is on the menu. Some will be frozen, pickled, or dehydrated.
Squash and cukes still going strong. Produce cart is finished, and nearly full. Leaves the cabinets free for processing. Much better arrangement.
Still no luck with lettuce. For some reason I am having trouble with it this year. Usually have it growing right and left. The only seeds that have had any luck were from 2011, and I didn't plant many of those, thinking they wouldn't even germinate.
Well they did germinate, but weren't real productive either. I am thinking it's time to check out the catalog sales, and try something new. Meanwhile I guess I'll try a few indoors to see if that works.
Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Finally getting some cherry tomatoes! Only had room for three plants as my whole yard is shaded. Refrigerator pickled a lot of green ones! The one plants cherry tomatoes are as big as golf balls, and delicious!

Picked the majority of the pears. They are really juicy this year. May have to make a pie or pear preserve.

Not enough to make a big batch of viking chili tho.
Early Asian pears are great, juicy, the fujis look really good too.
Squirrels have taken light share so far. Nets are up.

That’s a perfect size. When I make a salad, I don’t want any leftovers, because refrigeration ruins them. So no matter what, I try to use it all.
That size is just perfect to go on my lunch time salad.

We got no pears this year, but then we only planted them in 2010, and they’ve had some rough summers and winters. Maybe next year.

A big wind took it down recently...The neighbor in the picture is very tall and makes the plant look smaller that it really was.

Wish I could trade you some of my squash for some of your fruit. We have nothing except a few teeny weeny peaches with so many bad spots, you cant’ get much eating from them.

I pulled one of the three Trinidad Scorpion plants since we are over supplied with these little devils, plus the other varieties can use some more sun light in the raised beds. The little dehydrator works well on the sliced peppers, turning them into little poker chips for storage.
I've frozen jalapenos for winter chili and harvested about 100 paprikas, now dried and ground into powder for future use.
Son from Seattle spent a week with us and we made Poblano/portobella burgers which were excellent.
We're gathering about a dozen nice Roma and other tomatoes every day. Making sauce and pico w/ some poblanos.
Cukes are done.
Squash produced about one dozen nice keepers, then quit.
