UCLA Microbiologist Accused Of Making Bizarre Death Threat On Facebook

A UCLA researcher is accused of making a death threat to a writer about an opinion article he wrote for the Harvard Crimson entitled “Troubles with Thai Studies.”

“I swear that if I saw this (expletive) on the street I’d elbow his middle meningeal artery and leave him dead from epidural hematoma,” UCLA microbiologist Peera Hemarajata allegedly posted on Facebook.

The bizarre threat was aimed at writer Ilya Garger who is in Hong Kong.

Rachel Kim spoke with Garger Thursday via Skype.

It’s a story that is Only On KCAL9.

Garger said the point of his article was not to debate a coup in Thailand but to discuss Harvard taking money from one political side.

“It was surprising to see that a doctor and especially one at UCLA, would say something so silly. I had to read up on Wikipedia to figure out what it is that he was going to do to me,” said Garger.

The author said he isn’t surprised about Hemarajata’s reaction because he says on his Facebook post the doctor is still loyal to the Thai monarchy. But he is surprised that UCLA says it cannot take action against Hemarajata for making a perceived threat.

UCLA said in a statement:

“While UCLA and UCLA Health System abhor violence and condemn any threat of violence, we have no jurisdiction or authority to censor such hateful comments made in social media when they are made outside the course and scope of an employee’s work.”

“The university ought to consider taking stronger measures than just saying they’re not responsible,” Garger says.

Kim said she tried to get a comment from Hemaraja but that his Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts have all been taken down.

This is notsilly--it's time we stop excusing doctors, any kind of doctors, for their stupidity and/or criminal acts.

I think this is criminal. I think in most jurisdictions, this could be investigated as a bodily threat.

It was as serious as a menacing tagline. This is something to laugh at.

It is in the field of biology that you find the most liberal of scientists.

Not to hurt the feelings of biologists, but it is largely a science of memory and categorization of types and kinds. And it is among biologists that you find the most strident advocates of the Religion of Evolution.

Evolution isn't really a theory, but a convenient hat rack to make the ordering of life on earth coherent. There is no causality to "descending from X which descended from Y." That does not mean that it didn't happen, or couldn't happen, but it is not "settled science."

And, furthermore, it is usually within the field of biology that you hear the nonsense term, "settled science" the most often. After millions of laboratory hours, no biologist has been able to introduce a new species of any multi-cellular animal. There's been a scientist at the University of Chicago who claimed to have "created" a new fruit fly (which given the amount of experimentation on that one creature, should have been a piece of cake), and I used to have lively conversations on FR asking a crank "Where's the Fly"? That was over ten years ago.

It was a biology PhD fighting over tenure at the University of Huntsville, or UA Huntsville, that killed several other scientists because she was denied tenure.

You just see a lot of looneys who want to call themselves "scientist" gravitate into this science, which does not demand a lot of math...

Anybody want to bet certain types of comments wouldn't be covered by this policy? Even ones that aren't violent?

Anyone who knows the Thais knows that they are, by and large, wonderful, gentle, extremely kindhearted people; however, they are also extremely patriotic, whatever their party allegiances, and can get spectacularly angry when provoked.
