Ohio State football: Braxton Miller hurts shoulder again, sources say

Ohio State senior quarterback Braxton Miller, considered by several polls to be among the preseason leaders to make a run at the Heisman Trophy, reinjured his right shoulder in practice this afternoon, sources told The Dispatch. The injury puts in jeopardy his playing status for the coming season.

An OSU spokesman would not confirm the news, and coach Urban Meyer could not be reached for comment.

But it likely means that redshirt-freshman J.T. Barrett will be the starter when the Buckeyes open the season against Navy on Aug.30 in Baltimore. Barrett moved ahead of sophomore Cardale Jones late last week in the competition for the No.2 spot behind Miller, Meyer and offensive coordinator Tom Herman said.

Miller was coming back from shoulder surgery performed in late February after he suffered an injury to his right throwing shoulder during the Orange Bowl loss to Clemson. He had been on a slow return to full practice activity, having sat out contact in spring drills and through most of preseason camp.

The reigning two-time Silver Football award winner, symbolic of the Big Ten MVP as voted on by the league coaches, he had been expected to push himself a little more in the afternoon practice today, the second of a two-a-day for the team.

Not good news for Buckeye fans. Talk on the message boards is of a redshirt.

Between the two backups, the talent may be equal minus the experience. I have a feeling that J.T. Barrett is going to reap that same baptism by fire that started Braxton's career his freshman year.

If Miller were to redshirt, it would be gawd offel for the B1G teams next year with 2-3 QBs in the mix on certain plays. Hard to imagine Ohio State losing more than two games without Miller this year, but with him they run the table.

Go, Bearcats! Although I have never been to Cincinnati, I’m a University of Cincinnati fan because I hold one unit from there after completing an online course.

Yea... I just know we’ll play OSU tough just like we do ND every year. It takes a big team a few quarters to adjust to the wishbone and wear down my middies so it usually comes down to the final quarter of play. We took them to the last minute goal line 3 years (?) ago, so if OSU isn’t 100% focused due to some late shake ups there’s a real chance we’ll take the game.
