As GWAR's annual GWAR B-Q carried on over the weekend, it was with a somber note of remembrance to band leader Oderus Urungus who died of a heroin overdose in March.
Though friends and family of David Brockie (the man behind the gnarly thrash metal monster mask) laid him to rest on April 1 at a private April Fool's Day service, as Consequence of Sound reports, his alter ego had not yet received a send off. So, in a tribute true to form for the outlandish band and its fervent fans, the Oderus costume was laid out and lit aflame Friday on a small viking ship floating amid Hadads Lake at the Richmond, Va. event.
Per viking tradition, the ship was set ablaze by a fiery archer's arrow. Watch video of the funeral here:

Before, the ceremony began with eulogies by Lamb of Gods Randy Blythe, Holliston creator/writer/director/star Adam Green, and GWARs long-time publicist Jon Freeman.
Blythe had eulogized Brockie at the private April event and noted this in his speech, stating, "Dave is the only m***r I know who has to get put away twice." Later, he posted the below image of the flaming ship to Instagram with the following text. You can watch footage of the nearly hour-long ceremony in its entirety here.
"Tonight we sent Oderus home in a fitting manner at the public memorial for Dave Brockie. A blazing Viking ship with Oderus laid out in it, the cuttlefish pointing proudly straight up. Watching my friend Dave's costume go up in flames in front of a thousand fans was so much more intense for me than the private memorial for friends & family we had April Fool's Day. I spoke at both of them, as GWAR asked me to, & both times as I spoke I was sad. But watching his alter-ego burn tore me up way more than the first memorial, maybe because there was Dave, the human who was my friend who just "left us"- I never saw his body- & then there was Oderus, who was something entirely else. To watch his stage gear burn was like watching part of my life literally go up in flames. I was sobbing my eyes out as I took this photo. It was just a super-intense moment. Very beautiful, but overwhelming. Fly free, Oderus- you are missed."

Saw the video a couple days ago. Quite fitting.
JMSG.
Just more Satanic garbage.
RIP
Vikings were satanic???
Vikings were pagan as far as I know.
This guy wasn’t a Viking, though.
No one is forcing you to click on the link or to post.
The rest of the internet is that way. -——>
Why does my comment bother you?
Im not sure why such “news” is relevant to a conservative political site.
I make my observation.
I think bands like this have done a lot to dehumanize and degrade our society.
Because self-righteous Church Lady personalities are notoriously hypocritical.

Well, your opinion is noted. However, freedom some times means people are going to do things you don't like. I personally can't stand most "Country rock" and "gangster rap". You'll never hear me calling it Satanic or blaming it for Societies ills.
A man died due to his own stupidity. Like it or not, they were relatively famous and it was a rather neat send off.
Be a classless 'tard if you want. Just realize your attitude speaks volumes about you.
“I personally can’t stand most “Country rock” and “gangster rap””
Me neither, though I like, or liked, some of the originals, eg Lynyrd Skynyrd and NWA.
It’s interesting you bring up rap because one comment I thought to make was that if I had made a similar comment about a rapper’s funeral I doubt would have objected.
And I will say, you sound like the self-righteous one, not me.
I am arrogant, self-centered, and a bit egotistical.
I fully admit it.
And?
GWAR were aliens.
I know some adults in their late 40s/50s who went to this. Didn’t know about it (saw some photos of the BBQ on facebook).
They aren’t outlaw bikers. They aren’t meth heads (or heroin junkies). They aren’t jugalos.
This wasn’t even a genuine funeral (apparently it was an annual event) and an opportunity for a fans send-off/reunion for a band that stretches back 25+ years.
One of the funnest shows I ever went to... was GWAR.
Just sayin’.
