What entertainer’s death should be a national event then?

I believe Fox News just reported that the White House will be making a statement over Robin Williams however no statement from the Kenyan Muslim over Christians that are being slaughtered.

You tell me, Madonna, Michael Jackson, George Clooney, Robin Willaims?

I’m a grown man, 60 years ago men didn’t have to be exposed to all this womanly and teen girl stuff.

It’s nothing new. When Mark Twain died in 1910 it was national (and international news).

Yes it is new, female and male news/information used to be separate, men could live in a world of news and foreign affairs and largely outside of the world of pop culture, it is why newspapers had a women’s section, and news magazines had few photos and little about entertainment.

I don’t know what any of this has to do with someone’s sex. As I’ve said when people like Mark Twain and Will Rogers died it was huge news.

You don’t even know what sex has to do with this?

Are you young, too young to remember how the 1960s also destroyed media and news?

You have some unrelated beef that you’re trying to attach to this story. I’m guessing you think that Arts news is inherently feminine? I could name as many examples as you want that predate the 60s. Rudolph Valentino’s early death was a huge news story. So was Carole Lombard’s.

My point was simple, I regret that one of the things we lost after the 60s was a male dominated news industry, where news was geared to important male oriented issues.

I miss the dry reading of my childhood, and this triviality is the biggest reason that the old news media lost it’s core audience of men, my guess is that you didn’t see the media transition to this because you are too young.

You’re making assumptions about what constitutes ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ news. There is nothing feminine or trivial about reporting on the death of a cultural figure.

You are correct. The death of a national celebrity has always been big news. The death of Rudolph Valentino is another example. The difference today is that, with 24 hour news cycles, outlets like TMZ, Entertainment Tonight, and the cable news channels, these stories quickly reach the point where they are no longer "news", and become exploitation.

You really don’t know how the feminists made the media what it is that you are so devoted to today and that the rest of us are so repulsed by with it’s celebrity/entertainment obsession, do you?

Didn't we just go through this with Philip Seymour Hoffman? He was another actor who killed himself.

I wonder if the national news media would go into such a drawn-out, concentrated, adoring frenzy over an actor's suicide if the deceased was a staunch conservative instead of a dedicated, rabid lefty like Williams?

Did the media go bonkers for hours and days when Charleton Heston passed normally several years ago?

Charlton Heston was in his mid 80s and suffering from Alzheimer’s. His death wasn’t a shock. A suicide of a major celeb who isn’t elderly will always be huge news.
