Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone whod like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows. The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

Wow! Sheriff Joe is a real thinker and what a great solution.
The guy is awesome.
He came here to Indiana and gave a fundraiser speech for Republicans last year.
I wish he was 52 instead of 82, I think he could be a national candidate force.
Too bad he is older than Moses. He needs to be around for 30-40 more years to help right the ship.
I can hear the liberals complaining now.
“This puts the animal shelter people out of work!”
I am sure Obama will find fault with this. He really does not like Arpaio
Although a New Yorker, I have been donating to Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s campaigns for a few years now.
I believe he would be a great director of Homeland Security or I.N.S.
Our dog rescue is looking for a guest speaker for the October reunion.
Sheriff Joe was mentioned since he’s 300 miles away from our location.
Better than any of our “party leaders”. He should run for president.
‘m sure some animal rights group will protest this as animal abuse. But for you students out there, Nevada prison system has a program where you have have a classic car restored by prisoners. You provide all the parts and they charge a fee. It amounts to less than a dollar an hour for labor. And the prisoners learn a trade from those in prison who were auto mechanics.

My sheriff has said that most of the things sheriff Joe does, whether they are good ideas or not, could not be implemented in our county because we can’t afford the lawsuits. This one sounds like it would be a good idea for any county.
Excellent. Way to go Joe! Common sense solutions and he is much better than our Harvard education pResident.
Honestly, this probably does those guys a bit of good, too.
Or at least some of them.
You know how libs say all these criminals need is love..... Well Sheriff Joe is giving the criminals some love and caring for abandoned animals at the same TIME...
Taking care of two birds with one harded as stone criminal....
To turn a phrase..
** He started chaingangs so the inmates could do free work oncounty and city projects.** Then he startedchain gangs for women so he wouldnt get suedfor discrimination.”
I love the way he tweaks liberals.
Sheriff Joe PING
If you like your jail cell, you can keep it.
What a great idea — good for him, the prisoners and the dogs.
That is exactly what the unions will say. They are probably filing a lawsuit right now.
I wished that was here in SC. I’d send the 65 cj5, the 82 cj7, and the old K5 in for different levels of servicing.
