Married Nearly 62 Years, Couple Dies 4 Hours Apart

After nearly 62 years of marriage, little separated Don and Maxine Simpson — not even death.

The Bakersfield couple died just four hours apart in July, spending their last moments side by side. He was 90 and she was 87.

Granddaughter Melissa Sloan tells The Bakersfield Californian that her grandmother died first, and when her body was taken away, Don Simpson’s soul left with her.

I have been married to the lovely Mrs Tupelo for 52+ years and I can well understand what Melissa Sloan is saying about her Grandfather. I do not think I would live very long if she goes firstest.

My aunt was living in Compton, Calif., when the town was hit hard by the Long Beach Earthquake. Afraid to stay in their home lest it be knocked down by an aftershock, the family found temporary shelter in a cabin in Santa Ana Canyon. While on that sojourn, she met my uncle, and after fours of dating, they married. Their marriage lasted 62 years. When my uncle died, her health quickly deteriorated, and she died nine months later.

My parents were married 57 years when my mother passed due to lung problems. My father lived on another 6-1/2 years.

These two people were like the rock-meets-a-hard-place. They lived around one another, and that is not good.
