Makes sense if one is creating an intelligent gadget or wants to learn about embedded systems, how to blink an LED and all that fun stuff. If you just want to learn general application programming, GUI and web development, scripting languages, etc., a virtual machine running Linux on a PC works fine and is free (VMPlayer or VirtualBox). If you hose it up badly, delete the VM and start over.
