Trash day in our neighborhood shows huge discrepancies between neighbors. We compost yard waste, break down boxes for recycling, take otherwise usable but no longer needed household items to Goodwill, separate recyclables and put out a partially filled 30 gallon wheelie every week.

Our neighbors both work for the government, buy new stuff constantly, put the old but usable stuff on the curb (often, but not always, picked up by scrappers) and make little or no effort separate recyclables. Their volume is at least eight times ours. Yet we pay the exact same rate.

We're told that when we turn 65, we can apply for a lower per bag rate, but we have several years to go.

It shouldn't be age based anyway. It should be based on how much you consistently have picked up. It wouldn't be that hard to measure.

Perhaps time to buy stock in trash compactors for the home?
