Couple Locked Son in Trunk to Cure Fear of Dark: Police

A Pennsylvania couple charged with locking their 5-year-old son in the trunk of their moving car -- to cure his fear of darkness -- will spend two years on probation in a program for first-time offenders.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports 26-year-olds Jeffrey and Danielle Lenhart, of Latrobe, entered the program Thursday in Westmoreland County.

The Lenharts weren't required to plead guilty to endangerment charges, and can ask the court to expunge their arrest records if they complete probation without incident.

Police say the couple gave their son a flashlight and told him to look for candy in the trunk during three trips to an amusement park about 10 miles from their home last July.

Defense attorney Brian Aston says, "Things aren't as they were described in the police report'' calling the incidents "more of a game.''

This is private family business. That is not a method I would use, but some families are different. This same kind of family would throw the child in the water to get him used to the water. Certain areas of the country, that’s a very good thing, to know how to float. The boy is not hurt. So who’s the busybody? Always a Mrs. Kravitts (as on Bewitched) peeping from behind the curtains.

When I watched “Bewitched” as a child, I always felt bad for the Darren character, who had to put up with Samantha’s mother. What a witch she was!

Wait until you get into fingernail pulling. That’s when the fun starts.

Parents who would do that to a five year old boy are demented, sick, cruel and messed up - along with anyone who thinks this is okay.

She(Andora) would never leave and stay gone. Andora was always giving Samantha and Darren ‘tests’ to prove their loyalty and true love for each other. I think if Bewitched was done today, Andora would try to seduce Darren, and allow the affair to go on for quite sometime before she stopped ‘the test’.

I’ve heard that if you lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car and come back in three hours one of them will be happy to see you.

If the dog had an opposable thumb and a trigger finger, things would be different.

Even if the kid was completely okay with this (and I bet he wasn’t!!!!!) it was still far too dangerous to put any person in the trunk while driving. What if someone rear-ended the car? No bueno.

Luckily authorities discovered the scared child before the couple had the chance to drive him to a dark house/cave. or they planned on keeping him in the trunk until night time blanketed the Earth, and then they would open the trunk, face to face with his fear to deal with it without the sun interfering in the final encounter between the young boy and his greatest, biggest nemesis : the dark.
