“Moose” is an Algonquian (Indian) word, Europeans had to call the critter something before the discovery of North America, so we are in fact the odd ones out (however as I happen to be a member of an Algonquian tribe, that suits me just fine). What I find strange (and potentially confusing) the that North Americans have opted to call an entirely different animal an “elk”, which is apparently known as a “wapiti” another Indian word (though not Algonquian) by people in other parts of the world.
