Howard Webb caught in the middle of Brazil and Chile row over favouritism
Brazil have reacted furiously to what they believe have been pre-match attempts by Chile to put pressure on the English referee, Howard Webb, who will take charge of the World Cup last-16 meeting between the nations, describing them as immature, ridiculous and deeply disrespectful.

The ad shows the miners standing shoulder to shoulder in the Atacama desert—above the mine where the 33 men nearly lost their lives—while Mario Sepulveda, the man who became the public face of the miners, gives a moving speech about the relentlessness of the Chilean spirit. According to the AP, he tells the Chilean national team that they can beat the odds in the World Cup, reminding them that the miners "overcame death itself."

Howard Webb had a difficult task with these two teams that like rough play. Chile can hardly claim Webb favored Brazil, especially on the negated goal on the hand ball call; which Webb did get the call right.

USA ref Mark Geiger has been designated as the first referee for one of the Monday matches. He was very good in his first two matches. If his next one goes well and the U.S. gets eliminated in either the round of 16 or the quarterfinals, do not be surprised if he is designated for a semi-final match.
