It wasn’t immediately clear what the source of the lights was.

We are in the midwest and this last weekend my husband and a friend witnessed 6 lights in the sky following each other, then one by one the lights suddenly went out. We’re thinking drones?

Parachute flares used for illumination of night maneuvers or artillery practice. The one witness even saw the smoke trail of the flare. If there are multiples together the smoke trails are easy to see, if you’ve got binocs you can see the parachute the flare hangs from reflecting light from the flare. This is typical nighttime stuff over a Marine base, saw lots of this at LeJeune when I was a kid back in the 60’s.

They burn a bright golden orange color.

These people live near Pendelton and they’ve never seen an illumination flare before?

I think on average I look to the skies as much as the other guy.

Why is it I never get to see these things?

Must be I’m not looking hard enough!

I would say the local quadcopter club was out having some fun with high output LED lights tethered a few feet below the quads..............Just speculating.
