A substitute teacher in New Jersey won't be allowed to fill in again at an elementary school after she allegedly taped shut the mouths of several students last week, officials say.
The teacher was working at the Winfield Scott Elementary School in Elizabeth and placed decorative tape over the mouths of five students during a "quiet game" after lunch, according to parents and officials.
One of the students, Angelique Correa Henderson, said she felt "pressured and scared" as the teacher taped her mouth "because we were jabbering too much."
"My heart kept on beating fast," she said.
Angelique's father, Munford Henderson, is outraged.
"I don't understand what she was thinking," he said. "We're talking about kids. You're sworn to protect and teach, not to hurt them and put them in fear."
Other parents at the school were equally concerned.
"You don't do that to anybody, especially kids," said Marie Yacinthe. "You don't do that."
As police and state officials investigate, Angelique's father wants to make sure the teacher is permanently barred from the classroom.
"She does not need to be teaching and being around kids if she can't control her emotions and the way she presents herself around kids," he said.
The teacher has been taken off the list of substitutes for consideration at the school, officials said. She had no previous record of issues or difficulties.
These parents would have LOVED the collection of paddles our teachers possessed. Most were crafted in the wood shop with holes drilled in them (to increase hitting speed).
Some had raised Elmer’s Glue with the names of the paddles (Yup - they named them). One had the name in reverse and he’d let you go to the locker room or bathroom and look in the mirror so you could see his handiwork.
It all depends on the context. Did she use scotch tape, easily removable and no skin damage, as more of a joke or did she use something that would tear the skin when removed?
There is just no intelligence in the administration these days.
Well, if I had come home from school telling my Mom that I had my mouth taped shut at school, she probably reached for the wooden spoon. Not the legal yellow pages.
Here is an addendum to Ron White’s Line:
You Can’t Fix Stupid!
But With Duct Tape you can Muffle it.
Our schools shop class competed yearly and let the principal pick the one he would use for the year.
He would exact punishment out in the hallway so everybody in the entire school could hear the cracks
My teacher taped my mouth shut in 1st grade.
Munford - you should be mortified, not outraged. You are the father of a child who is out of control and won't shut up when told to shut up.
Every time I go to an urban movie theater I find eventually that I want to do this to over 1/2 of the patrons.
Oh my goodness! If I did this or any of the teachers here did this, the students would laugh their bottoms off. They would think it FUN! They would beg to have tape on their mouths. They would want to do it every single day. (I am not a teacher. But I have spent some time in the classrooms of my children. Last week, I put some children in a sort of time out. I called it a quiet game with me and them while the rest of the students continued to watch a movie.)
