ROME Italys singing nun, Sister Cristina Scuccia, is the winner of The Voice of Italy, after becoming a global sensation starting in March when her rendition of Alicia Keys No One in the talent shows blind audition got more than 50 million hits on YouTube and appreciative Tweets from Keys herself and Whoopi Goldberg.
On Thursday night, wearing her nuns habit, crucifix around her neck, and plain black shoes, the 25-year-old Sicilian nun won Italys version of The Voice with 62.3 percent of the vote.
My presence here is not up to me, its thanks to the man upstairs, she said before reciting the Lords Prayer onstage.
Sister Scuccia, who won a recording contract with Universal, was coached by Italian rapper J-Ax. She beat long-haired male rocker Giacomo Voli.
As the singing nuns popularity soared in Italy and around the world, her performances on stage on Italys The Voice, aired by pubcster RAI, have included a cover of Bon Jovis Livin On A Prayer (see video), Cyndi Laupers Girls Just Want To Have Fun, and What a Feeling. From the studio audience her fellow sisters cheered her on, often breaking out into dance moves themselves.
Scuccia, a member of the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family reportedly took her vows in 2010 after a rebellious adolescence. She has been training as a singer for years and previously auditioned for several other TV talent shows, including X-Factor in Italy.
She has said she was inspired to audition for The Voice by the words of Pope Francis to get out onto the streets in his call for a Catholic Church that is closer to common folk and their everyday lives.

I’m her biggest fan!
The ORIGINAL Singing Nun:

Is all this appropriate for a nun? I mean doesn’t it go against her vows of poverty, modesty or something? Just wondering. I’m not Catholic.
It’s a risk. I had a music professor who was a priest, when I was in college. He got a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music and off he went to study piano performance. He’s not a priest any more. He wanted this world, not the next.
And what about Amy Grant, who started out singing Christian pop and then tried to go regular pop and got divorced and remarried and has never recaptured the pure inspiration she had before fame went to her head. (My perception— I”m not an Amy Grant expert).
All I can say is, the Sister’s motives seem wholesome enough, so she needs some prayer to keep her grounded. I think she really did affect some people, though. Somehow, just seeing a young nun in habit reminds people that there is sincere good in the world, without a worldly, cynical undertone. It gives people hope.

Thanks for your reply.
Heck no! I have been dating a tattooed biker nun I met in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
Sr. Cristina is appropriately representing her religious order, the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family, with the full support of her Mother Superior, Mother Agatha. The Ursulines run a performing arts school in Rome, called the Star Rosa Academy, where Sr. Cristian studied voice. Performing arts -— as a vehicle for evangerlization-—is part of the Ursuline mission.
I’ve been meaning to ask, when do you plan on getting Mom home???
.
Ok. Thanks, Mrs Don-o.
I’m not Catholic, and about all I know about nuns is what I see in the movies. LOL
But it seems that all the nuns had to take a vow of poverty, modesty, shun pride, etc.- and this just didn’t seem appropriate to me for a nun to be singing and jiving around with the unsavory bunch she was appearing with.
No offense.
.
DD, the Sabbath doth approach and I must begin repentance. Pingeth me not with scurrilous repartée until Monday.
These “unsavory people” are the sisters’ mission territory. I suppose they should stay with the devout!
They appeared to me to be typical ‘rappers’ or ‘hip hoppers’ carvorting around the nun as she sang..just didn’t seem approprr to me.
The word “cavorting” has a connotation of morally tainted (possibly sexual) pursuits, There was no “dirty” dancing, lewd behavior, or even immodest dress associated with Sr. Cristina’s performances. If there were, I myself would have objected.
