Well I once used my ex`s red polish to mark the splines on a universal joint when I dropped the transmission on an old GMC Sonoma.

Never fooled with differentials but remember one bit of advice from HS auto mechanics class. It was that lipstick was very helpful in doing some of the alignments and teeth contact testing.
