CHARLESTON, WV - UPDATE:
Police say that a father who admitted to killing his five-week-old baby waited almost 27 hours before reporting the death.
Police found the child and Robert Jeremy Smith in a car in front of a home in Kanawha City, WV. When Smith left the car he said, "the baby is dead, I killed the baby," according to the criminal complaint.
Smith told police during questioning that when he picked up the child he lost his grip and dropped the baby. Smith also told police he didn't report the death because he was afraid he would get in trouble.
Smith also admitted to police that he had shaken the baby but only after police asked him if he had.
The child was pronounced dead by a medic at the scene where he was found. The criminal complaint states that the child appeared to have suffered multiple skill fractures.
Smith was given a $500,000 property bond.
Smith faced child neglect charges in 2013 but those charges were dismissed.
