When Plante used the mask others tried it but had trouble finding the puck after a save when the puck was at their feet and they didn't like that aspect.
In your photo Bruins Jerry Cheevers had his mask formed and fitted to his face and improvements made to see down at his feet. I believe this helped other goalies get used to using a mask. -Tom
