Southern white loyalty to GOP nearing that of Blacks to Democrats

President Obama’s landslide victory in 2008 was supposed to herald the beginning of a new Democratic era. And yet, six years later, there is not even a clear Democratic majority in the country, let alone one poised for 30 years of dominance.

It’s not because Mr. Obama’s so-called new coalition of young and nonwhite voters failed to live up to its potential. They again turned out in record numbers in 2012. The Democratic majority has failed to materialize because the Republicans made large, countervailing and unappreciated gains of their own among white Southerners.

From the high plains of West Texas to the Atlantic Coast of Georgia, white voters opposed Mr. Obama’s re-election in overwhelming numbers. In many counties 90 percent of white voters chose Mitt Romney, nearly the reversal of the margin by which black voters supported Mr. Obama.

While white Southerners have been voting Republican for decades, the hugeness of the gap was new. Mr. Obama often lost more than 40 percent of Al Gore’s support among white voters south of the historically significant line of the Missouri Compromise. Two centuries later, Southern politics are deeply polarized along racial lines. It is no exaggeration to suggest that in these states the Democrats have become the party of African Americans and that the Republicans are the party of whites.

As a native born and still living in the South Southerner, I will take parts of this article as a compliment. However, try as Cohn might, he still manages to blame race for the lack of white support in the deep South. Wrong. Obama's lack of white support comes from our belief that that he is far more sympathetic to Islam than Christianity, that he does not love America, our accomplishments, history or future. We see him bowing to the Emperor of Japan while he guts the US military and uses it for a hard core, left wing social laboratory. We understand that he will not defend Americans overseas and believes the Presidency is an office without boundaries, limits on expenses, travel or perks. We believe he has no respect for the Constitution and would throw it in the trash can if he could and become President for Life given the chance. So no, NY Times, its not about race, its about the survival of the country you think we are still not a part of. We are not the crazy Uncle in the attic, rather we remain the conscience of our country.

Full agreement there...Zero has been a disaster and it has nothing to do with race. Should it end up being Hitlery in 2016,I’ll despise HER with every fiber of my being. It certainly won’t be racial then, either...it will be an extreme hatred of leftist fascists.

The other point is that I, at least, am not blindly loyal to the GOP...they merely represent a slowing of the slide to our oblivion. So as much as he wants to equate voting GOP to blacks voting for dumbles, its not the same thing.

Democrats want discrimination against whites written into law in the form of affirmative action edicts. Why would ANY white person that didn't hate his own race support a party that pushes such a policy?
