My OB/GYN in New Jersey quit practicing about 10 years ago. What she was paying in liability and malpractice insurance combined with the normal costs of doing business were enough that it simply wasn’t worth it. She is selling real estate and partnered with a colleague to do some side work assisting low income families with their medical needs - without taking insurance. Another doctor in the practice relocated out west to a state where the insurance costs were more reasonable.
factor in the expense of malpractice insurance and taxes, and their net isn’t as good as you think
I made my kids keep clear of medicine, given what was coming.
I sure hope these doctors enjoy their paychecks - in California, they are just one legislative bill from being MANDATED to take Obamacare patients, given that very few will now take them, given the pittance they receive.
Coincidentally, Orthopedists are also the biggest Alpha Hotels you'll ever meet outside of a DNC convention.
I've dealt with doctors of many stripes for almost two decades. Radiologists and GP's are the most likeable, IMHO.
I would also ask how many hours they are working a year. Very few doctors with a 40-hour work week.
Yeah but they’re still paying their student loans.
It’s usually the case, misleading figures are thrown out, very few people realize how little money a doctor receives versus what is billed. The majority of ones that really rake it in are either mostly cash or billing fraud like the friends of democrats.
Computer types have the term “GIGO” - Garbage In, Garbage Out. ‘Nuff said.
Exactly. My ortho surgeon told me he pays $145K/annum for malpractice insurance. [Connecticut]
Now once we find out how much they pay for malpractice insurance, student loan repayments, continuing education fees, licensing and accounting fees, equipment costs and so forth, and whether all these were paid from the figures quoted or covered in addition to them, we’ll know what the docs really earn.....
“They need high incomes to pay off their debts.”
Is that your logic?
ER docs have tough jobs. Often 24 hour assignments with the psych, violent, drug users, teen suicide attempts, and serious trauma. Code 3's come at 3 am most often and let me tell you, I would not want to have to be responsible for those outcomes and decisions.
Get physically close up with a hep C positive drug user or some unbathed smelly person who needs a rectal exam to rule out a GI bleed - on very little sleep. Get puked on and bled on and screamed at and cursed - then talk about pay more.
