I graduated from a different HS in Lilburn in 1973. Lilburn was on the verge of the stix in those days and a solid white middle class community. Our graduating class, a public school, of ~ 250 was lily white.

It seems to me that the best way to curb these types of senseless assaults is for the assailant to lose their hand as punishment for their behavior. The current system is woefully inadequate in dealing with feral thugs that seem incapable of behaving in a civilized manner. An uncivilized response as punishment may be the best way to deter the behavior in other feral thugs.
