CNN apologized on Friday for falling for a Twitter hoax and declaring that soccer legend Pele had died.
"#BREAKING Brazilian former soccer player Pele dies at 74," CNN's @NewDay Twitter account tweeted to its 54K+ followers.
Pele, to use a phrase coined by conservative writer aficionado Emily Miller, was only "TwitterDead," and not really dead, which CNN reporters found out after speaking to Pele's representatives after the initial Tweet was blasted out.

WTH is “twitter dead?”
I always knew there was sum ting wong with CNN.
I’m pretty sure it refers to a person being announced dead on Twitter but it turns out to be only a rumor. Kind of like the “R.I.P. Jonah Hill” Facebook hoax from a couple of weeks ago. Basically, it’s a falsehood that goes viral. You know “A lie is half-way around the world before the truth gets its boots on.”
And here I thought CNN reported he was on MH370.
“CNN: The most trusted name in news!” LOL!
Twitter Dead is when someone tweets that a famous person died and many retweet thinking it’s true, but the person is not really dead.
The hits just keep on coming for CNN. The plane story is getting old, ratings are down, layoffs in Atlanta, reality TV programming, now this.
CNN grumbles about being disadvantaged since it does not slant its news, therefore is boring. They say no one comes to the game to watch the referee.
Laughable, no one watches MSNBC either, obstensibly the other “team”.
He got better?

"Oh, wow!","A really black man playing a game I know nothing about."
They didn't teach soccer until high school - two days tops.
Why is Pele famous? We know why.
I also heard Stephen King is dead.
“Twitter Dead is when someone tweets that a famous person died and many retweet thinking its true, but the person is not really dead.”
Think Woody Harrelson was Twitterdead last year..
“”Oh, wow!”,”A really black man playing a game I know nothing about.””

I knew nothing about soccer, much less Pele, until 1970, when an older friend suggested that I fly him to Mexico City to see the World Cup.
We were there for the semi-final and the final game between Brazil and Italy. I admit that it was quite exciting and infective. Pele certainly earned his reputation.
We also rented a car and toured the area south of Mexico city, as far south as Taxco...one of my greatest trips.
#RealPele: “#CNN No, I’m still kicking”
Pele was Michael Jordan before Michael Jordan.
Someday he will be dead for real and everybody will think it’s a hoax.
It would of course *sound* plausible.
Eaten by alligator, snake venom , etc.
When I heard that he REALLY died, I didn't believe it.
