Ever since the cult of Apple Silicone Valley has loved young people with no external commitments that want to work 100 hours a week. Get away from the Valley and you start getting businesses that like older people that get the job done right in 40.

Reading some books on Google lately. One book written by Doug Merrill talks about this. He was in his 30s when he started working there but he was one of the "old men". He talked about getting flack for not answering an email at 3am.

Had a wife and kids he rarely saw but he still felt guilty for going home occasionally at a reasonable hour.

Now Google does feed their employees lunch and dinner. Their campuses have barber shops, dry cleaning, day cares and what not. But it's not entirely unselfish on Google's part. They want their employees to practically live there. They want Google to be their entire waking life. If not for zoning laws, they'd probably set up cots for their employees as well so they can sleep there too.

This kind of lifestyle pretty much mandates that you be in your 20s or 30s.
