There’s a reason why this phrase is repeated twice in the Bible: Every man did that which was right in his own eyes (Judges 17:6 and 21:25; alluded to in Proverbs 21:2). There is no freedom without the right kind of laws.

Both the church and America (and i do not mean to combine them as one) began in principled dissent to established authority, which esp. in the first place, had rendered itself fit to be replaced in Divine providence, but in neither case was it driven by a basic animosity toward authority in general (though many of America's Founders had an animosity toward institutionalized religion).

Thus they replaced one authority with another, with a transcendent document being the supreme authority, not one man or group of men of the earth, esp. in the former case, and not consequently in practice in the latter. .

I’d love to be an anarchocapitalist. That’s not possible, so I am a minimalist. Government should be as small and local as possible.

Not society I would want to inhabit.
