Jones had been living in Deerfield Beach under the alias Bruce Walter Keith since at least 2005, the U.S. Marshals Service said

One of the U.S. Army’s “15 Most Wanted” fugitives – on the run since he escaped from a military prison in Kansas in 1977 – was arrested Thursday when he showed up for work in Pompano Beach, authorities said.

James Robert Jones, 59, had been using a fake Florida driver’s license since 1981 and had been living in Deerfield Beach under the alias Bruce Walter Keith since at least 2005, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Accused Florida Theater Shooter Also Was Texting, Records Show The U.S. Army private was convicted of premeditated murder and aggravated assault in 1974, the Marshals Service said in a news release.

He was serving a 23-year sentence when he escaped from a maximum-security federal prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1977.

In January the Army asked for the Marshals Service' help finding Jones. Investigators used a facial recognition database and found a positive match for Jones, living under his alias in Florida.

PHOTOS: Weird News Members of the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force surveilled Jones' residence Thursday morning and followed him to Pompano Beach, where they arrested him without incident when he arrived for work, the Marshals Service said.

A positive fingerprint match was taken from Jones at the Broward Sheriff's Office, according to the Marshals Service.

British Woman Gets 6-Year Sentence in Pompano Beach DUI Manslaughter Crash Jones has been booked into the Broward County Main Jail on a military hold, online jail records show. He will be held there until the U.S. Army takes custody, authorities said.

It wasn’t immediately known whether he has an attorney.

Jones changed his birth date on official documents, but used his actual birth year of 1954 and his real address in Deerfield Beach, the Marshals Service said.

As bad a deserting is, he’s also a murderer.

We OUGHT to have a treaty with Russia: we send our WORST to pay for their crime in a Russian prison....better yet, send him put to a GULAG!

HECK, for that I'd even buy a few rubles for the guards to have some caviar.

This is the part that interests me. I assume they must have scanned DMV photos... across the entire US?

Wow.

Did he desert? If he was serving a sentence for murder and escapes I don’t think desertion is a valid charge. Escape? Yes. But desertion, no.

The facial recognition software aspect of this is interesting insofar as this guys last imaging would have been in 1977 yet, they got a match from some databank in 2014.
Things that make you hmm?!

Article says he was using a fake driver’s license, so I don’t think he would have been in the DMV databases.

That piqued my curiosity as to the system and sources used as well. I’d guess DMV database too.

I’d guess it was a real DL under his assumed identity. In the old days you could forge a fake birth certificate fairly easy and fool the clerks. Its not nearly as easy now. The illegals are usually only able to get drivers licenses under false identities by going to other DMV employees that are on the take or are family members. Walk into many DMV offices and look who’s working there. Usually lots of minorities and a few white people but not many unless they are in administration. You hear about identity theft rings comprised of DMV employees that are busted from time to time...

How do you get a replacement license for a fake license where there was no original? The article is worded like he was still using one from 1981.

They used a database, but how did that database find his face. Is the scary question.
He was using a fake license so his picture would not have showed him where he was, and
wouldn't be in any DMV database pointing to his state or city.

Are they using public scanning now? It's the only way, but the article says nothing.

Maybe he applied for an EBT card or something and they took his picture? It does say he had filled out some sort of “official documents”.

One of my Sunday School kids deserted from the Marines a few years back. They never did anything about it.
