The music industry. Pffft. A bunch of gangsters, thugs, and crooks.

Hanging songwriters out the window (like Jerry Leiber) to get them to fork over ownership/publishing for $1.

Slipping crooked contracts to the Beatles and Stones to take ownership of US publishing.

Skimming receipts by selling non-promo labeled new stock inventory to distributors at cutout pricing for full retail sale and then billing the bands (MCA did this to the Who and others in the 80s to the tune of tens of thousands of copies per title).

Collecting receipts but not paying out monies owed to the artists (Atlantic did this to Ruth Brown and others).

The industry will sue. And try to block any competition.

ASCAP brought up the payola hearings when BMI was getting all of the hits with race, hillbilly, and that rock and roll thing (none of which ASCAP would publish). “But we don’t have any of the hits anymore!”
