Food stamp redemption at military grocery stores, or commissaries, has nearly doubled since the beginning of the “Great Recession,” topping out at $103.6 million in FY 2013, from $31.1 million in FY 2008.

While the amount of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, or food stamps, have soared over the past five years, the rate of increase has slowed, according to data from the Defense Commissary Agency and published by CNN Money Monday.

From FY 2009 to FY 2010 the level of spending jumped from $52.9 million to $72.8 million; from FY 2010 to FY 2011 the amount of SNAP benefits redeemed increased from $72.8 million to $87.8 million; from FY 2011 to FY 2012 it increased from $87.8 million to $98.8 million; and from FY 2012 to FY 2013 from $98.8 million to $103.6 million.

I look at this as more of an economic control issue than one concerning illegals; the government will dole out to each according to their perceived needs (via food stamps, welfare, housing subsidies, college admissions, gubmint jobs), and take from each according to their perceived abilities (via taxes, including ObamaCare), and the concept of discretionary income will be a thing of the past...

Ths trend looks like a sure indicator that the commissaries should be eliminated. I can recall that until I was an E-4 we would have had some foodless days except for the break we got on commissary prices vs retail store prices.

From what I’ve heard from lower enlisteds, it’s more and more common for the closest DEFAC to be closed.

If you’re on a large post, good luck getting there if you have no car. It could be miles away.

As much as hussein has pissed off our military, how is he going to order them to shoot American citizens, when he decides its time?

From 31.1 to over 100 is “almost doubled”??? By my math, that’s “more than tripled”.

A lot of that could be stopped by them having so many babies at the E1-E3 ranks. The military has turned into Job Corps. It has become a jobs program.

I couldn't help but notice the single moms toting M-16s that looked longer than they were in Afghanistan. They looked ridiculous. They didn't even look like soldiers.

The Polish on the other hand, looked very much the part of professional soldiers. Because they are.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, E-1 to E-4 did not marry & could be Section 8 discharged for having kids out of wedlock. Junior enlisteds required the commander’s permission to marry, & only with the recommendation of the first sergeant.

Does the Army still require `command sponsorship’ of enlisted family members for the SM to draw quarters allowance & higher subsistence?

They need to keep the commissaries open. It’s part of a soldier’s pay. Average DeCA market basket is 30% less than civilian stores.

Anyway, soldiers on food stamps is a crying shame, IMO.

“Ths trend looks like a sure indicator that the commissaries should be eliminated. I can recall that until I was an E-4 we would have had some foodless days except for the break we got on commissary prices vs retail store prices.”

Your second sentence would seem to contradict your first.

You wouldn’t have eaten but for the commissary, so the commissaries should be eliminated.

Come again?

What needs to happen is that commissaries need once again to be subsidized so they can offer lower prices, and the military should have their pay doubled. That will solve the humiliating problem of soldiers on food stamps.

TOMMY
by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)

I went into a public-’ouse to get a pint o’ beer,
The publican ’e up an’ sez, “We serve no red-coats here.”
The girls be’ind the bar they laughed an’ giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an’ to myself sez I:
O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;
But it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but ’adn’t none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-’alls,
But when it comes to fightin’, Lord! they’ll shove me in the stalls!
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, wait outside”;
But it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide,
The troopship’s on the tide, my boys, the troopship’s on the tide,
O it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide.

Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.
Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, ’ow’s yer soul?”
But it’s “Thin red line of ’eroes” when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s “Thin red line of ’eroes” when the drums begin to roll.

We aren’t no thin red ’eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;
While it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, fall be’ind”,
But it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind,
There’s trouble in the wind, my boys, there’s trouble in the wind,
O it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind.

You talk o’ better food for us, an’ schools, an’ fires, an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Chuck him out, the brute!”
But it’s “Saviour of ’is country” when the guns begin to shoot;
An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;
An’ Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool – you bet that Tommy sees!

My beloved Commandant tried to re-instate command authorization for Privates through Lance Corporals prior to being allowed to be married, but the SecDef spanked him hard and leadership has cowed ever since.

I couldn't agree more. I forget the name of the Marine Commandant in the mid-80s who wanted to restrict marriage to E-5 and above. The femi-nazis, lead by Patsy Schroeder (Rat-CO) had a fit. Without congressional support, he had to back off. The fact is, our young enlisted are the best compensated high school grads in the nation.

And the politicos continue the putsch for an all-singles military (except weirdo marriages for the high ranking effete, of course).

Provide on-post housing for proper families of enlisted combat specialty soldiers.

That does not surprise me at all considering they are paid under min wage.

It was the same under Slick too.

AMMO: These really tell you it is not our Military’s health care that is the big issue they make it, but the waste, fraud and abuse in the DOD budget to grease donors palms. Our Military does not even what a lot of this crap!
