Pit Bull Survives Eating Gopher Poison in Beef
NBC Bay Area ^ | Friday, Feb 14, 2014 | George Kiriyama

A Cupertino woman considers it a miracle that her 3-year-old pit bull, Hammy, is still right by her side.

Last month, Hammy was rushed to a 24-hour emergency animal clinic in Campbell after she ate what turned out to be tainted food.

Emily Aldrich, Hammy's owner, said the incident occurred when she let the dog outside to go to the bathroom. She later found Hammy munching on something from a bag of food.

The food was strips of beef laced with Strychnine pellets in a Ziplock bag. Strychnine is a common type of gopher poison.

Minutes after Hammy ate the poisoned food she started going into seizures. Aldrich believes someone came into her backyard and deliberately tried to kill her dog.

"Oh my God! Why would someone do that?" she said. "You know. It was just questioning like why, how and just no understanding."

Aldrich rushed Hammy to an animal clinic where doctors pumped the dog's stomach and flushed out the poison. But minutes later, Hammy had another seizure that forced her heart to stop.

"I literally watched her die right in front of me and I felt so powerless," Aldrich said.

Aldrich said Hammy was dead for 12 agonizing minutes. But doctors wouldn't give up and managed to revive her.

"I couldn't believe it," Aldrich said. "I think my own heart stopped at that point because I was just in such shock."

Now three weeks later, Hammy is walking around and slowly getting back to her old self.

"The fact that she's still here with me is the biggest blessing that I could ever have," Aldrich said. "I never thought I would be so attached to a dog. She's my best friend."

Aldrich's family and friends have come together to raise money to help pay for Hammy's medical bills. To contribute, click here.

If someone was trying to poison her pitbull, I would bet that dog is not very nice. Why people have dogs that are known for killing other dogs and biting people is beyond me.

I’m sure it found that bag while minding its own business inside it’s own fenced in yard....

There’ve been other cases os dog poisoning, and I don’t think it had anything to do with the temperament of the dogs involved.

The article says the dog was in its yard. Did you read it?

Have you ever heard of John Wayne, wmfights? If you watch his westerns, he would kill a bad guy, but he never shot him in the back.

There's a point to what I am saying, but I'm not sure you'll get it.

If it's a pitbull I would bet the majoprity of them do deserve it.

The article is about a pitbull not a maltese, so trying to change the observation to all dogs is at least misleading.

Actually, I’d expect a Maltese to be quicker to nip.

Assuming that a dog deserved to be poisoned because of his breed is reprehensible.....at least.

Sure, everyone should have dangerous dogs in their neighborhoods. Even better if they have small children that like to run and play. Just let those nice friendly pitbulls loose.

Maybe you got my point. I doubt it. Most people who have dangerous dogs don't think about how it might affect others.

Yeah, I read about all those people that are killed by maltese's all the time.

The reprehensible thing is why these dangerous dogs are being breed in the first place and why people who purport to be animal lovers buy them.

If a dog is dangerous it should be dealt with. Appropriately. Poisoning (a human, a dog)is a cowardly thing to do, and not manly at all.

(I had a dangerous dog in my neighborhood when I was in grade school. It was dealt with. Never once thought about poisoning it)

One thing I noticed in real estate is when you start seeing pit bulls you know the quality of the neighborhood is going down.

Where you see the designer dogs the neighborhood is "trendy".

Where you see the heinz 57s it's middle class.

Oh I don't know, I'd say it was done by an ignorant hateful person with a closed mind, with concepts beyond them. And what part of poisoned her dog to the point it actually died do you not get? Haters just got to hate!

I hesitate to fault anyone who is pushed to this point with a dangerous dog in close proximity. Too many animal lovers can't see the danger because they love their pet and think of their pet as part of their family. They think all animals are "special".

Pit bulls were breed to be thrown into pits with Bulls and later to fight other pitbulls. If you read about someone being mauled by a dog odds are it's a pitbull. If you read about some child being killed odds are it's a pitbull. People who own these dogs are imposing a big danger on their neighbors.

So some neighbor thinks they need to kill this dog, instead of going through some process that probably goes nowhere, it's hard for me to condemn them.
